Everyday Idioms: As a Matter of Fact


These everyday-life idioms can help foreign learners acquire spoken English skills so that they can engage in fluent communication. The key expressions will be explained, supported by example, sentences and where relevant, language help notes. Leave a comment by giving an example for each idiom.


as a matter of fact
1) used when you are going to give more details about something
له‌ ڕاستیدا (كاتێك به‌كاردێت كه‌ وورده‌كاری شتێك بده‌ی به‌ كه‌سێك) 

I haven’t been here long. As a matter of fact, I just got off the plane yesterday.
ماوه‌یه‌كی زۆر نییه‌ لێره‌مه‌. له‌ ڕاستیدا، دوێنێ تازه‌ له‌ فڕۆكه‌ دابه‌زیوم.
2) used when you are going to disagree with or correct what has just been said.
ڕاستییه‌كه‌ی (كاتێك به‌كاردێت كه‌ ناڕازی له‌ شتێك یان كه‌سێك قسه‌یه‌كی كردووه‌ و ده‌ته‌وێ ڕاستی بكه‌یته‌وه‌).

‘Was he in a bad mood?’ ‘No, as a matter of fact, he seemed quite cheerful.’
جه‌وی ناخۆش بوو؟ نه‌خیر، ڕاستییه‌كه‌ی، ته‌واو خۆشحاڵ دیاربوو.
